WMF Piano Concerto Festival
is made possible through the generous support of the
Li-yung Shang How
Memorial Scholarship Fund for Music Education
This fund was created in loving memory of Li-yung Shang How (April 16, 1936–April 17, 2020), her love for music performance, and her commitment to music teaching by her husband Shu-wu Paul How (June 23, 1936–March 19, 2021). The fund provides access to music events and music opportunities for all, but especially for students with financial need, including students who qualify for the National School Lunch Program (https://www.fns.usda.gov/nslp).
Li-yung (Lynne) received a bachelor’s degree in music from National Taiwan Normal University in 1960 and a Master of Music degree in music education from Michigan State University in 1968. A lyric soprano and pianist, Lynne enjoyed many years as a church vocal soloist in both Cleveland Heights, OH and Santa Monica, CA; she was a deacon at both churches. Lynne was also a well-loved piano teacher, predominantly for the Taiwanese-American community in Santa Monica, from the late 1970s until she retired in 1995. Her love for music was passed down to both her children, Deborah H. How and Daniel S. How (January 27, 1970–March 7, 2023), and to both her grandchildren, Kian How Tung and Kielor How Tung.
